A-List has launched an innovative and cost-effective program to help schools administer their own A-List SAT preparation courses using their own facilities and faculty. While many other SAT prep companies like to run programs with their own personnel, A-List believes in empowering teachers and schools who have existing relationships with the students.
Regardless of one's opinion about the SAT, the fact of the matter is that it is still an enormously important event in a student's academic life. While a GPA is extremely important in the college admissions process, a bad SAT score can tarnish an otherwise impressive record and can mean the difference between a top tier school and a second tier school. Furthermore, hitting a certain SAT score can often qualify a student for scholarships or help recruited athletes get into the best programs. Helping students get the highest possible SAT score is in everyone's best interests.
But the SAT is a unique academic experience. While students are expected to have a solid grasp of a certain number of concepts that they should have learned in school - such as mathematical formulas, vocabulary, or grammatical rules - much of the test is not content based at all, but rather tests a student's reasoning ability. It's less about what you know than about how you apply it.
This can make it difficult to address SAT subjects within the context of a normal class in school, because content is the primary goal of most classes. By the time most students take the SAT, their math classes are teaching concepts far beyond what they will need on the test. English classes in school often focus on literature, specific books and literary history, while the SAT tests general reading comprehension without any specific literary knowledge.
Establishing separate classes specifically geared toward SAT preparation can ensure that students gain and refine the skills they need without sacrificing time from other classes. Many companies offer private SAT preparation classes, but these courses can cost $700 to over $1000 per student for a course that lasts only a few weeks. Running these classes in school with the existing faculty has a number of benefits:
- Subsidizing the cost will shift the burden of cost away from the students, who may not be able to afford the best courses.
- Holding courses during the school day will make it easier for students to attend without sacrificing time for schoolwork, sports, or the arts.
- The school's administration of the classes will make students take the work more seriously than they would independent classes, which are often viewed as extracurricular and therefore optional.
- Training faculty in new subject matter will create a new level of valuable expertise in the staff that can grow stronger and more refined over the years.
We offer three levels of service:
- Level One: Training
A-List experts will set up training sessions with faculty to give teachers a solid grounding in the format and content of the test, the most effective techniques for answering questions, and an understanding of how to properly diagnose student errors. - Level Two: Materials
A-List will license our extensive suite of SAT materials for use in classrooms, including our proprietary textbook, The Book of Knowledge, our box of vocabulary flash cards, and materials for practice tests. A-List is also proud to offer Vocab Videos, a pioneering system that is revolutionizing the way students learn vocabulary. - Level Three: Course Support
A-List will assist schools in setting up an in-school course, including logistics and course planning, additional training sessions and office support throughout the year, and services for grading and analyzing practice tests.
Depending on the extent of your program interest, A-List can offer one, two, or all three of these services. Furthermore, each part of the program is tailored directly to your desired level of service, whether you just want your teachers to become familiar with the test or you want us to walk you through an entire year-long course.
