About the SAT Subject Tests

More and more students and U.S. colleges are focusing their attention on SAT Subject Tests. Colleges take these tests seriously and use them to inform their admissions decisions. In fact, most selective colleges require 1-3 SAT Subject Tests as part of their application. Subject Tests measure your knowledge and skills in particular subject areas, and your ability to apply that knowledge. Check the admissions sections of your target colleges’ websites to see if you are required to take Subject Tests. Our tutors will help students prepare for the SAT IIs that their colleges require.

Why do I need to take the Subject Tests?

Many colleges use the Subject Tests for admission, for course placement, and to advise students about course selection. These tests give you and colleges a very reliable measure of how prepared you are for college-level work in particular subjects. Used in combination with other background information (your high school record, SAT scores, teacher recommendations, etc.), they provide a dependable measure of your academic achievement and are a good predictor of future college performance in specific subject areas.

Map out your test schedule in advance.

You can take up to 3 Subject Tests on the same test date but not all subjects are offered on every test date. The Subject Tests are offered on the same days as the SAT so you must carefully plan out your test schedule. Most students take the Subject Tests once or twice and the SAT two or three times—so you should get started on your plan right after GCSEs. You may wish to consider taking the ACT which offers two key benefits: the test is offered on different test dates than the SAT/SAT Subject Tests and some colleges will accept the ACT in lieu of the SAT and the SAT Subject Tests (your must of course check the requirements of your specific colleges).

Choosing which Subject Tests to take.

For U.K.-based students choosing the right Subject Tests can prove to be a challenge. Ideally, you will match your AS or IB subjects to the SAT Subject Tests. This strategy works well if you are taking maths, sciences or languages. However, if your focus is on subjects like Geography, Sociology, Psychology etc. then there may not be obvious candidates. A-List advisors can consult with you on Subject Test selection.

Subject Tests fall into five general subject areas: English, History, Math, Science, and Languages. See the table below for a full listing of subjects offered and their test dates.
