Mary was born amid the Midwestern cornfields of Illinois before transplanting to New Jersey. She has a BA in Economics and English from Villanova University.
Her parents are avid Irish Catholics that embarked on a mission to populate the world by having ten children. Mary is the third in line to the Finnegan throne, and spent an unspeakable amount of time studying the SAT in order to compete for college scholarships. Around this time, she started writing short comedic stories as an affordable form of therapy. She graduated as valedictorian of her class and was a Villanova Presidential Scholar.
At Villanova, Mary tutored hundreds of students in an array of subjects ranging from microeconomics to English Literature. She also ran a college literary magazine, where she assisted students with proofreading, grammar, and content revision throughout their submissions.
Recently, Mary pursued her MA in Prose Fiction from the University of East Anglia—England’s longest standing and most prestigious creative writing program. She hopes to impart some of its insatiable spirit for reading and writing upon her future students. On days when she isn’t tutoring, Mary is completing her dissertation and working on her debut comedic novel.
“Mary is our daughter’s tutor. We’re very pleased that A-List listened during our initial telephone consultation and accurately chose a tutor for our daughter through their ‘match-up’ system. We couldn’t have chosen better if we tried. Mary is enthusiastic and well informed of all material that needs to be covered. She presents the material in a way that keeps our daughter focused and interested in learning more. We not only saw an improvement in our daughter’s testing skills, but in her school work as well. The strategies that Mary taught her have been very beneficial. Our daughter looks forward to her tutoring sessions. We hear so many stories of her friends dreading their weekly tutoring classes or sessions, so we couldn’t be more pleased with our choice of using A-List and of course, Mary Finnegan.”

I think A-List is a great organization. My tutor was positive and tailored the material to my learning style. She made learning each subject fun and presented new topics in an engaging fashion. Thank you so much to A-List for helping me achieve my personal best!
A-List gave me more than just practice tests and test-taking tips, though these were invaluable. My tutor connected with me on a personal level and helped me understand that I was capable of getting the score I wanted. Suddenly, I viewed my test-taking experience as a challenge, not a burden. I walked into my ACT with the confidence that I knew exactly how to conquer every aspect of the test.”

Both my children had an amazing experience with A-List! Steadily, she worked hard to improve her test scores. Taking the practice tests allowed her to gain confidence and learn to manage her time during the tests. Then a college advisor helped her write her college essays. She was an amazing guide who helped Phoebe focus and streamline her supplements and essays. Now she will be attending her dream college, Rice University, School of Architecture!
